Excerpt: ...of erecting a pier, in front of the town quay, and in the month of November of that year, a meeting of the watermen was convened at the Town Hall, when the proceedings of the previous meetings were laid before them, with the intimation that the corporation had not decided on more than this, namely, that they would not consent to the erection of a pier on their estate, unless provision was made for the watermen. Notwithstanding this, the watermen organized themselves and offered so vigorous an opposition to the measure, that in the session of 1832 the Bill was lost, after a long and expensive struggle. An Act was, however, obtained in the next session, the royal assent being given on the 28th June, 1833; not, however, until after a most violent and protracted contest. A clause in this Act gives the Corporation power to compensate the watermen, by allowing them wages for work and labour on the pier. The town pier was completed and opened on the 29th July, 1834. During the proceedings in Parliament a temporary jetty had been erected in front of the town quay, under the Act 9 Geo. IV. c. 56, and when it was necessary to remove this for the erection of the pier, another was constructed to the westward, and used until its completion. In 1833 the number of steam-boat passengers had increased to 290,000 per annum, and with the prospect of a progressive increase; a new company was formed, called the Star Steam Packet Company, which, in April and May, 1834, launched four new and powerful boats.
